NSW Net Zero Planning Grant in Action: Lyka Case Study

September 24, 2026

Following the opening of Round 2 of the NSW Government’s Net Zero Planning Grant, we’re looking back at how Cress supported Lyka Pet Food through Round 1 of the program.

Lyka develops fresh, complete and balanced meals for dogs and cats, formulated with veterinary nutrition experts. With sustainability already established as a core part of its business, Lyka used the grant to assess its existing net zero planning, identify priority gaps and define the next steps in its net zero journey.

As a certified B Corporation, Lyka has an established commitment to measuring, improving, and transparently reporting its social and environmental impacts. The Net Zero Planning Grant provided an opportunity to build on this foundation and establish a clear, structured pathway for future emissions reduction, climate planning and disclosure.

Identifying the priorities

The first milestone of the project involved a review of Lyka’s existing approach against the NSW Government’s Net Zero Business Guide’s nine elements:

  1. Strategy
  2. Governance
  3. People and capability
  4. Data
  5. Targets
  6. Action plan
  7. Finance
  8. Stakeholder engagement
  9. Reporting

Working closely with the Lyka team, Cress identified priority areas for further development. This process informed four key actions for the next stage of the project:

  • a greenhouse gas emissions inventory, aligned with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol
  • a climate risk and opportunity assessment, aligned with Australian Sustainability Reporting Standards
  • emissions reduction targets, following the Science Based Targets initiative
  • a net zero action plan, supported by the Net Zero Business Guide.
Turning the plan into action

The second milestone focused on delivering these actions and identifying potential pathways for future emissions reduction, tailored to Lyka’s operations and existing sustainability initiatives.

The result was greater visibility of emissions across Lyka’s operations and value chain, a strengthened understanding of climate-related risks and opportunities, and a clearer roadmap for future emissions reduction.

The work also strengthened Lyka’s preparedness for future climate-related disclosure requirements and broader business resilience.

The NSW Government has since featured Lyka as a Round 1 success story, highlighting how the Net Zero Grant supported net zero planning.

Building on the foundations

For Lyka, the project built on sustainability work already underway, identify priority gaps and key next steps in its net zero journey.

With Round 2 of the Net Zero Planning Grant now open, Cress can support eligible NSW businesses across the planning process – from assessing governance arrangements and building internal capability, emissions measurement, stakeholder engagement, to reporting.
